zMASSACHUSETTS BOOKS LESSON PLAN: Famous Massachusettians
Gr. 3 – All Classes
OBJECTIVE:
Students will be introduced to a variety of author/illustrators.
Students will have a tie into social studies curriculum.
Students will listen to and appreciate a narrative. Students will learn how to find information using an encyclopedia.
STANDARD:
ELA: Literature Strand- Learning Standard 11:
Students will identify and apply knowledge of theme to literature and provide evidence from the text to support understanding.
Reading & Literature - Learning Standard 9:
Students will identify the basic facts and essential ideas in what they have read, heard, or viewed.
Reading & Literature - Learning Standard 8:
Students will identify the basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation.
History & Social Sciences – Learning Standard 3.7:
After reading a biography of a person from Massachusetts, summarize the person’s life and achievements.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will be able to recall and retell the story in sequence.
Students will be able to answer questions regarding the story.
Students will be able to complete the story extension.
Students will begin to understand and use the Biographical Research Center, one of the State Databases.
PROCEDURE:
Greet students.
Review theme “Massachusetts”.
Ask students if they remember last week’s story.
Review. Show clue (flower bulb). As for suggestions for the story.
Show the Massachusetts Book to the students.
The Instructional Assistant will have read the Massachusetts book the previous week.
Review the plot of the book.
Discuss the story.
Ask students if they know other famous people from Massachusetts. Explain that today, we are going to look up information on some famous Massachusettians. Tell the students that we are going to use the Biographical Research Center Database. Explain that when looking up information on people you use their last name. Ask why this might be? Discuss information in parenthesis after the name (birth date & death date).
Explain that this is part of the information you need to find today…if you get specific…exact birth day, etc. to use that.
Explain and show work sheet. Dismiss students to table area. Distribute famous people names and work sheet. Circulate to assist students.
If time, ask students to share.

Assessment:
Observe students' responses to questions about the story, famous people from Massachusetts and searching the Biographical Research Center.
